Nothing like a good puzzle...
When I bought my first Playstation back in 1998, I like many others, got seriously addicted. The games for me were the puzzle / adventure type games like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, and Abes Odyssey to name a few.
Years past. Games which would have taken me weeks, began to take days, and I found myself growing a tad bored. It seemed the cool games were not getting published often enough, and the new ones were modeled on the old ones, the same games which I had already mastered. Around this time I bought my first ever real computer and found a vast new world of challenges within the many design and animation programs I had loaded onto the Hard drive.
In retrospect burning out on Playstation 1 was a good thing. The puzzle solving involved in learning about programming is not only far more challenging, its definitely more constructive. I enjoyed learning about how to make a 3D game far more than I ever did playing a 3D game.
A view to other languages...
As a multi-lingual teacher at EDIM suggested. Most languages work in similar ways once you get to a certain level. I now see what he means. I can now grasp ideas from other languages. Its good to know all that I learn with Directors Lingo was not be wasted. I would recommend to anyone comfortable with directors score and movie scripts to make the step toward parent / child script objects. Although initially it seems hard. Once you grasp that concept, Considering structuring with score and movie scripts for something larger than little seems ridiculous.
And to the shockwave unbeleiver...
You may hear lots of people say shockwave3D is crap... Don't believe em. Consider what you want to achieve. There are several 3D engines available that will let you Mod someone elses game. You need to ask yourself whether you want to be a designer, programmer or understand everything!
Shockwave3D is good for a start into the vast interactive 3D world, and because its a slow 3D engine you will be forced to make the right decisions regarding code and rendering. There is also a large community supporting shockwave3D. I chose it mostly because of the browser ability it has.
